9 kids books about being a big sister

Another baby on the way? Here are some great books for your daughter to prepare for her exciting new role as big sister.

“Why are you having another baby?” It was actually a good question.

At first, our daughter Mia was so excited when we told her the big news, of a baby brother being months away from joining our little family. But the closer the big day came, the more confused she was about her new role.

It’s a big leap for a young girl to become a big sister. And sometimes books just get the job done best to help a little lady understand what’s ahead. (Just like it does for new dads: check out the best books on becoming a father.)

Does your daughter have a new brother or sister on the way? Here are 9 great books for her about being a big sister:

1. I Am a Big Sister

by Caroline Jayne Church

Packed with adorable pictures, this is a sweet story to prepare your girl for what’s to come with her new sibling.

This was such a great tool for our girl, introducing the idea that a sibling was on the way. She loved the pictures and how the book reminded her that she was once a baby too! It’s beautifully designed and we found the book tolerated all the pulling and page turning from our excited sister-to-be.

2. The New Baby

by Mercer Mayer

Part of the amazing Little Critter series, The New Baby takes your girl through all the things they’ve got to look forward to with a new baby in the house. It’s from the perspective of a new older sibling, so new brothers will love it too.

3. Big Sister Now: A Story About Me and Our New Baby

by Annette Sheldon

Big Sister Now follows new big sister Kate, who takes on a bunch of new and exciting roles when her baby brother Daniel arrives. At first, she feels confused, a little left out and unsure of her place. But a resilient and creative Kate finds comfort in the big change, learning how to be a loving, confident big sister to her baby bro.

4. You’re the Biggest: Keepsake Gift Book Celebrating Becoming a Big Brother or Sister

by Lucy Tapper & Steve Wilson

A beautifully illustrated picture book, You’re The Biggest makes the idea of being a new big sibling fun. With Lucy Tapper’s trademark illustrations, it follows a family of foxes and their older siblings’ new and important roles.

We love it because of the family-first vibes, highlighting that it’s not just your daughter’s job to make the new bub welcome—it’s a family effort.

5. Best-Ever Big Sister

by Karen Katz

How different a big sister is to their younger sibling: from how they eat their food to how they read (or chew on) books. Karen Katz’s beautifully designed books helps your daughter understand all the different things they’ll see when baby arrives.

One thing’s for sure, you’ll be re-reading Best-Ever Big Sister a lot. But the good news is, it’s a fun read that keeps the grown ups engaged too, with the book’s interactive, lift-the-flap design.

6. The Berenstain Bears’ New Baby

by Stan & Jan Berenstain

When I was growing up, it was rare not to see a Berenstain book on a new baby’s shelf—I don’t think much has changed, thanks to the timeless stories from Stan & Jan Berenstain. In The Berenstain Bears’ New Baby, Sister Bear gets a new sibling and adjusts to life with a bigger family.

This great book reminds your soon-to-be big sister that even with the birth of a new brother or sister, some things don’t change.

7. I’m a Big Sister

by Joanna Cole

A sweet book from Joanna Cole about a young girl adjusting to her new role as big sis. It emphasizes all the positive things about being an older sibling, helping the big transition with beautiful illustrations and heartwarming messages.

Joanna Cole also has a companion book for big brothers. You guessed it, it’s called I’m a Big Brother.

8. Big Sisters Are the Best

by Fran Manushkin

Being a big sister is exciting! That’s the message Fran Manushkin gets across in one of our favourites for toddlers transitioning into sisterhood. It’s packed full of love and focuses on all the things that change when a girl becomes a sister—and all the things that don’t (like riding on Daddy’s back).

9. Waiting for Baby

by Rachel Fuller

Beautiful watercolor illustration lines this great book from Rachel Fuller, which is aimed at toddlers awaiting the big day that they become a big sister or brother.

We love how Waiting for Baby created an opportunity for Mia to ask questions about what was to come. She felt included in the process, which was exactly what we wanted for her (and still is!).
